After watching my first live wrestling pay-per-view in probably sixteen years, there was only one thing to talk about this week:
Jinder Mahal is the WWE Champion and will now be mentioned in the same breath as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock.
Wrestling is real dumb sometimes.
But the thing I've been thinking of the most as it relates to all of this is a play one of my local theatre company's did a few years back: The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety. Chad Diety is a play that uses the backdrop of wrestling (we even had a local indie backyard wrestling operation lend us a ring for the run of the show) to examine race relations in America. The play was presented with a satirical knowing wink and subtlety that I imagine will somehow evade the WWE's presentation of yet another heel foreigner who hates America because America hates him for his ethnicity.
So let's talk about it.
