When I attended Kinda Funny Live last year, one of the first people I hung out with at the event was a nice, young man (or alternatively a baby-faced snake) named Alex O'Neill. Sean Pitts of KnerdsOnline, Alex, and I shared a Uber with another new friend Jacob on our way to Wing Wings for the first of many fan meet-ups that weekend and we were all nearly inseparable the rest of the trip.
As I got to know Alex (whom I had almost shared a room with but he went with a cheaper option), we discussed his passion for writing and his podcast, Irrational Passions. Alex was engaged in an exercise to write every day in order to keep the chain from breaking. If I recall correctly, he was somewhere around 50 days straight at the time and beating himself up a bit because he would've been nearly double that had he not missed one day a couple months prior.
As with pretty much everyone I've interacted with in the community we got along famously and kept in touch through social media. A couple months later, I noticed as he put out a call for one of his sites recurring features: "Monthly Passions" where the Irrational Passions team wrote about the games they'd been playing and invited some of their community to do the same. Wanting to flex my writing muscles again, I submitted a piece on Rocket League which he was kind enough to publish. Eventually, that tiny spark grew into the decision to launch this site and, inspired by Alex's writing streak, I kicked off my own in November, which is still going strong here on Day 145.
Alex was kind enough to let me participate in one of Irrational Passions' many Guest Top 10 shows last year and we've been talking on and off about getting me on the proper weekly show. I was a potential back-up last week if friend and fellow Knerd, Tom Hawkins fell through (which would have certainly been a nice way to spend my birthday) but instead I'll be recording tomorrow.
I look forward to chatting with Alex and company tomorrow about all things video games, Daredevil, Batman v Superman, and more. I'll be sure to tweet out the link to the live google hangout once we're up and running tomorrow, as well as the edited version on the podcast next week. I hope you'll swing by and give us a listen.
